Cendres - Ungeziefer

Dense, mildly unsettling Black Metal from France, the official home of unsettling Black Metal. Cendres operate at a slow-to-middling pace and create a sound thick and mysterious, like seeing forms through the mist in a swamp. They do a brilliant job of using low fidelity to their advantage in creating something that's a little uncomfortable to listen to, as opposed to just doing it because Darkthrone and 100,000 Darkthrone clones did it. I don't know who's in this band, but they sure as fuck know exactly what they're doing.

Time to Burn - Is.Land

One of those albums that I always seem to forget about, and then it destroys me all over again when I remember how good it is. Immense, loud, noisy and cathartic. if you're into Celeste, Breach or even Cult of Luna then this is a must-listen. (Speaking of which, have you heard the new Celeste songs? Fucking Christ. Next level.)

Monarch! - Dead Men Tell No Tales

A 2CD set that collects two releases by this DOOOOOOOOOM band from France. I think that I overrate this ever so slightly because they're fronted by a cute gal who makes adorable and incongruous artwork for the band (and for her other project Rainbow of Death). I'm into that. But me overrating them does not mean that they are overrated or by any means bad. If you're into 20-minute ultra-slow doom songs, this is for you.

Narodnaïa Volia rehearsal tape

There was Fingerprint, then there was Jasemine, then there was Narodnaïa Volia (trans. The People's Will). The latter, named after a rather sketchy Anti-Tsarist terror group from the 1880s, never released anything but this rehearsal tape has leaked out into the world and it is phenomenal. The quality is raw, but more than adequate for a rehearsal. The music bears more similarity to Drift, Ire or Uranus than it does to the members' previous projects. 5 tracks, 12 minutes, 1000% raging.

Hyacinth - s/t 12"

Hardcore from the North of France. Sounds like Bremen, Ottawa and, well, France. 5 originals and a ripping LIFE'S BLOOD cover. Don't mess with Metz. Recommended.
